History

The Chicago Chapter, Tougaloo College Alumni Association, Inc. historically has been one of the premier chapters. Since its founding, the chapter has espoused many good causes which have been of benefit to Tougaloo College and the Nation.  One of its most significant causes has been in the development of leaders who will help Tougaloo College meet the challenges of the future.  It is no idle boast, but significant fact that the Chicago Chapter has implemented strategic planning which has attributed to the Chapter’s lead in financial and programmatic support to Tougaloo College over the past few decades.

We here at the Chicago Chapter are proud to be one of the oldest, largest, and most storied chapters in the Association.  The Chicago Chapter is proud to have a large number of Annual and Life Members, with the late Honorable Corneal Davis being one of the first life members of Tougaloo College National alumni Association.  Our chapter is also quickly becoming one of the most diverse with regard to the age of our members.  We pride ourselves on serving the communities in which we live and work, both through Tougaloo College approved programs as well as, our own initiatives.

The chapter has produced Two (2) National Alumni Presidents and several other Officers and Committee Chairs on the National and Regional levels.  Our dedication to service is further exemplified by the fact that the chapter has produced no less than ten members of the Distinguished Service Level as Hall of Fame Inductees and Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Recipients..

Today, that legacy continues to grow.  Our chapter continues to produce leaders on every level of the Association as well as in the community.  We are active in programs supporting the UNCF, NAC.  In fact, Chicago Chapter Members are heavily involved in the three major fundraisers for the Chicago Inter-Alumni Council/UNCF.  They are:

  • The Chicago Teachers’ Campaign, which was started by Chicago Chapter Members, Ruby Jackson and Wilbert Smith,
  • The UNCF/Ebony Fashion Show, which was chaired my may years by Chicago Chapter Member, Dr. Frankie Sutherland ’71 and
  • The UNCF Pageant, which was also chaired by Joyce Small Delk for several years

In addition, the Chicago Chapter is also committed to developing the leaders of tomorrow as demonstrated by our close interaction with the Chicago area students attending Tougaloo College.   Moreover, we continue to award thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to deserving students in the Chicago community.
